JPA designs National Zoo Seals and Sea Lion Exhibit Water Treatment Facility

The Smithsonian Institution’s National Zoo in Washington, DC, features treasures of North American wildlife in the newly renovated American Trail. In partnership with Quinn Evans Architects, James Posey Associates provided conditioning and humidity control for a challenging 9,000-SF, 3.5 story space housing water treatment facilities for the seal and sea lion pool. The space included extreme humidity loads and differing needs for space conditioning strategy during different seasons. Cooling for the seal and sea lion pool is provided via a 300 ton chiller plant. We worked closely with the USGBC to achieve LEED certification via energy modeling of a non-traditional building type.
