Milken Museum & Conference Center

Milken Museum & Conference Center: Washington, DC

Founded by Michael and Lowell Milken, the Milken Family Foundation objectives are to elevate education, by recognizing and rewarding outstanding educators and by encouraging learning as a lifelong process. The foundation is establishing a new interactive museum, event, conference, and office location. When complete, this facility will encompass four buildings in Washington, DC. The first building acquired as part of the project was the historic Riggs National Bank, a 5-story structure on the National Register and a DC-listed historic property. The rest of the property is made up by three contiguous buildings – a historic 1-story bank hall and two 12-story office buildings.

This project includes restoration of the historic facades of all four buildings, expansion of the bank hall building, and all new MEP systems for this total 260,000-SF compound. Three buildings will be connected by a 6-story glass atrium, complete with a 60’ tall video wall, creating a cohesive space for desired functions. Along with conference and office space, the newly renovated facilities will include a theater, model classroom, broadcast studio, kitchens, private club and dining area, and an immersive museum experience focused around cutting edge technology.

Mechanical infrastructure for the project includes two separate chilled water plants and a single heating water plant.  The first chilled water plant and heating water plant is located in the central 12-story high-rise.  This includes two 250-ton water cooled chillers, equipped with water side economizer, two 250-ton cooling towers, high efficiency gas fired condensing boilers, and an array of air cooled VRF condensing units serving indoor terminal units. The second chilled water plant is located in the historic Riggs National Bank and includes one 280-ton cooling tower and one 280-tons indoor modular water cooled chiller.  This project will be designed to LEED Silver certification level.
