Following National Park Service sustainability guidelines, this $11M LEED Silver renovation included demolition of the existing monument entry and construction of a new 1,300-SF visitor screening facility at the monument’s base. The new program spaces incorporated a queuing and screening area, a security office, restrooms, an exit hallway, and an M/E basement. The MEP building systems included a ground source heat pump system with geothermal wells beneath the National Mall, which allowed the glass roof to remain unobstructed and provide visitors a full height view of the monument.
