Addition and Renovations

Peninsula Regional Medical Center: Salisbury, MD

To significantly expand facilities at this regional tertiary care medical center on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, JPA provided mechanical and electrical input for the Master Plan and subsequent phased implementation of the plan’s strategic priorities. The building program increased the usable medical center space to 950,000-SF. More than 15 clinical and administrative departments have benefited by almost 300,000-SF of new construction and renovations. Design included a new bed tower, emergency department with waiting room isolation capability, educational conference center, a second central plant, parking structure, and heliport. An atrium was added to the heart center, the cancer center was expanded, and renovations were made to outpatient services and diagnostic imaging.

Redundancy, in case of equipment failure, was incorporated in the mechanical and electrical systems with the use of N+1 fans for both general and isolation exhaust, boilers, and a major portion of the air handling system. Two 25 KV feeders provide redundant primary power sources to a new double-ended substation. Two generators with paralleling switch gear assure emergency power to life safety systems, critical care systems and emergency equipment. The new chilled water plant was designed to provide emergency back-feed to the chilled water plant serving the existing hospital buildings.
