New Physical Education Complex
Coppin State University: Baltimore, MD
A new 256,000-SF complex on this urban campus includes a 170,000-SF sports facility, a 67,000-SF facilities management/public safety building, and a satellite central utilities plant (SCUP). The central plant is designed to support the facilities’ current chilled and heating water demands, as well as existing and future dormitories and a dining facility currently planned for the north end of this Baltimore City campus. The project is LEED Silver certified, providing a 41.1% annual water use reduction and an 18.6% energy cost savings as compared with the ASHRAE Standard 90.1 Baseline model.
Major program components of the $110 million project are a 32,540-SF arena seating 4,100 spectators, a 10,375-SF eight lane NCAA aquatics facility, a 13,500-SF auxiliary gymnasium, 10,000-SF of intercollegiate athletic support and sports medicine areas, an 8,000-SF fitness center, 7,280-SF of multipurpose recreation space; and 5,630-SF of instructional space. Making up the balance are locker rooms, departmental offices, and public spaces. The complex includes an outdoor NCAA regulation 400-meter track, soccer and softball fields, and eight tennis courts.
