Malone Hall’s interdisciplinary research and collaboration goals required a diverse and flexible building, housing innovative research centers including the Department of Computer Science, the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (HEMI), and the Johns Hopkins University Information Security Institute. At 69,000-SF, the new building’s floor plan blends three floor levels of flexible computational laboratory, office, and collaboration spaces with one floor level of wet research laboratories. Information technology systems are prominent throughout, with a central building server room located at the ground floor level.
The $26 million project was designed in BIM using the COBie pilot program and has a goal of LEED Gold certification. Sustainability was always a core focus of the design for Malone Hall. Key sustainable building features designed by JPA included a variable-air volume underfloor air distribution system, radiant heating, a heat re-utilization system, energy recovery systems, LED lighting, daylight harvesting, and sub-metering of power and other building utilities. Central campus chilled water and high pressure steam utilities were extended both through the underground Decker parking structure and into Malone Hall to support the new mechanical systems.
