Sciences & Applied Studies Renovation & Addition
Montgomery College: Rockville, MD
Constructed in 1978 as the College’s first academic building, the original 2-story, 65,000-GSF building occupies a prominent location at the campus center. This LEED Silver project houses the College’s Physics, Engineering, and Mathematics Programs, and also serves as the campus’ tertiary IT Data Center. A $31M, two-phase project, this assignment included programming and design for the complete building renovation, 30,000-GSF addition (Phase 2), and construction of a portion of the renovation, including design of the Phase 2 renovation of the building’s operational portion, as part of schematic design. Phase 2 involved design and construction for a portion of the renovation; creation of appropriate vertical circulation paths connecting the building’s interior with the facility’s existing 1st floor main (north) entrance; and the addition, which features a 3rd floor over the existing lab, linking all building floors. During Phase 1 construction, the north half of the building remained occupied and in use by students, faculty, and staff.
