Towson Center Renovation And New Secu Arena
Towson University: Towson, MD
The new $56 million multi-use indoor arena for this major suburban Baltimore university was built next to the former arena, now known as Towson Center. Opened in January 2013, SECU Arena features state-of-the-art technology, with an NBA-style practice and strength facility, as well as spacious team lounge and locker rooms. At 100,000-SF, there are 5,200 spectator seats, 60 private club suites, 340 premium seats round the top of the lower bowl, and 120 courtside seats. The project achieved LEED Silver certification.
The arena includes a smoke evacuation system, electrically operated shades, lighting and camera stations for full television broadcast, center hung score/video board, and programming and advertising systems. Lighting, acoustics and audiovisual systems were designed to also accommodate non-athletic events. Other spaces include a large multi-purpose room to accommodate 200 people for pre- and post-game events, a hall of fame, media room, retail store, ticket office, concessions, and a catering kitchen. As part of the project, the former 84,000-SF arena in the Towson Center was renovated into practice courts, classrooms and exhibit areas.
