West Village Commons

This 86,400-SF mixed-use facility supports a population of 4,000 students in the West Village residential precinct of Maryland’s second largest public university. The four story building achieved LEED Gold certification and is the first LEED certified building on campus. It won the Engineering News-Record 2011 Best Projects Merit Award for Higher Education, and a 2012 Merit Award for Lighting Design from IES.

The primary program element is a 400-seat resident dining facility occupying the entire second floor. Other spaces include four retail dining venues on the first floor, a convenience store, and a two-story atrium connecting to the resident dining facility by means of a grand stair. The third and fourth floors offer casual student gathering space, offices, a full-service institutional kitchen, and a large convention-style meeting room to accommodate 1,000 persons.

A high-efficiency water-cooled chiller with magnetic bearing technology was selected for its overall savings in annual energy consumption. Building air-handling unit and building automation control systems were designed to accommodate significant variations in minimum outdoor airflow, resulting from both the exhaust requirements of the food service equipment and building occupant population. This outdoor air control was critical for maintaining the various programmatic and building pressurization requirements at each floor level, while delivering an energy efficient design.
