Washington Monument Restoration

Mount Vernon Place Conservancy: Baltimore, MD

This iconic monument to honor George Washington is the centerpiece of the Mount Vernon Place National Historic Landmark District in Baltimore. Completed in 1829, it is the first major monument in the country to honor the nation’s first President.

JPA was commissioned to perform an assessment of the existing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) conditions within the monument structure and adjacent site, along with making recommendations for expanded public exhibit functions. Based on the findings contained with the assessment study, JPA provided design services for the enhanced exhibit space, MEP system upgrades, the addition of fire protection systems, lighting replacement, security systems, and exterior sanitary and electric service upgrades. During construction, JPA’s plumbing system design required excavation to unearth a cornerstone which was found to contain one of two time capsules placed within the monument structure in 1815 and 1915. A public celebration of the 200-year old monument’s restoration occurred on July 4, 2015.
