Campus Green Development
McDonogh School: Owings Mills, MD
Implementation of the $40 million master plan for this independent coeducational school in suburban Baltimore created a campus quadrangle, anchored by the new Edward A. St. John Student Life Center and the new Naylor STEM Building. The three-story 65,000-SF student life center contains two dining halls with a full-service kitchen, large lecture hall with tiered seating, seminar rooms, and a nurse’s suite and student store, as well as academic program elements for the visual arts and dance programs. The new Naylor Building, also three stories, houses all academic program elements for both science and math in 35,000-SF.
As part of the Campus Green project, a central utility plant was constructed to generate chilled water and heating water for HVAC use in the new buildings, and included provisions for future expansion to other buildings. The mechanical systems within the new buildings took advantage of the new campus utilities by using air handling systems with chilled water cooling and hot water heating. Modern new mechanical systems with air conditioning and updated code-required ventilation were sensitively designed for the new buildings to fully integrate with the ornate architectural design. A new electrical distribution system and an energy-efficient lighting system for the buildings feature a combination of fixture types generally controlled by occupancy sensors and zoned light switches. JPA also designed the infrastructure for the communications systems, including a Category 6 data/voice system, and audio visual and security systems.
