Calvert High School Replacement

The original Calvert High School was constructed in 1963 as five stand-alone buildings arranged in a campus-like setting. A major addition and renovation infilled the open spaces and combined the buildings into a 203,250-SF school under one roof. This $57.7M replacement school, which accommodates 1,500 students, was completed in three phases. The design was enhanced by the use of skylights and clerestory windows, particularly in the cafeteria and music and art rooms. The building takes advantage of several grade changes to shape dynamic spaces such as the slope of auditorium and amphitheater floors and display areas in the art, music, and CTE labs — permitting opportunities for lighting and viewing that might not exist otherwise. At the project’s completion, the existing school was demolished except for the planetarium, field house, and gymnasiums, which were renovated and integrated into the new school.
