School of Pharmacy Renovation and Addition

Notre Dame of Maryland University: Baltimore, MD

Notre Dame Maryland University’s (NDMU) School of Pharmacy is the first of its kind for a women’s institution of higher learning in the US; the second institution in Maryland to offer the Doctor of Pharmacy degree; and the only private institution to educate pharmacists. It now houses the department of clinical and administrative sciences, the department of pharmaceutical sciences, and the office of experiential education. JPA’s involvement in this $14M, multi-phase project began with a feasibility study for the new pharmacy school building. After three phases of both new and renovation construction, the LEED Silver Certified project features 39,000-SF of technology-rich classroom, laboratory, and research space to accommodate 210 students and 40 faculty members. Chilled water, heating water, and laboratory compressed air services supporting the program of the new construction were installed within the ceiling of the initial construction phase and connected to the new facility via a utility trench. Air handling units and exhaust fans were integrated into an attic mechanical space with sloped ceilings, while maintaining generous service access. Laboratory exhaust discharge was carefully routed into a masonry chimney feature, concealing the ductwork from pedestrians.
