Fred Lazarus IV Center

This expanded and renovated graduate center is located in Baltimore’s Station North Arts District. JPA provided MEP/FP engineering services for each of the center’s two connected buildings: the Graduate Studio and the 1801 Falls Road building. Originally built in the early 1900s as the home of Morgan Millwork Company, the new Graduate Studio includes work and fabrication spaces; shared galleries; a lecture hall; meeting rooms and lounges; a public café, and studios for painting, mixed-media, and photography.
The project at 1801 Falls Road converted an adjacent Morgan Millwork building to MICA’s sculpture school. The renovated 33,000-SF building now contains office and classroom space, a sculpture studio, a wood shop, and a metal working area. Similar to the Graduate Studio, a complete replacement of the existing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems was required. New systems were designed to support an open floor plan and included specialized systems supporting a paint spray booth, a welding shop, and a wood fabrication area with dust collection capabilities. A building-wide lighting control system regulated by occupancy sensors was designed to provide two lighting levels for each studio space.
