Dundalk/Sollers Point High School

A new 365,300-SF building consolidated the program of Sollers Point Technical High School with nearby Dundalk High School. The new facility was the largest single project undertaken by the Baltimore County Public Schools at that time, representing a unique combination of two types of high schools – one comprehensive and one technical. The $79M building program was designed to accommodate 1,857 students. The comprehensive Dundalk High School features general classrooms, science and computer labs, main and auxiliary gymnasiums, an auditorium, a dining room with a food court and full kitchen, a health suite, and administrative and faculty offices. Sollers Point Technical High School focuses on programs for computer sciences, engineering technologies, construction management, energy, culinary arts, allied health, salon and spa management, welding, automotive technology, homeland security, air traffic control, and diesel truck technology. A centralized chilled water plant with three high-efficiency 400-ton water-cooled chillers supports the school. A ground-source geothermal system was designed to support program areas requiring year-round operation. A series of variable air volume air-handling units and energy recovery units serve the heating and cooling demands for the remaining program areas. JPA’s lighting design provided overall lighting-power density 25 percent below the maximum allowable permitted by ASHRAE Standard 90-1-2007, which helped to earn the new school LEED Gold certification.
