Fort Worthington K-8 Replacement School

Baltimore City Public Schools: Baltimore, MD

As the first replacement school in the City School’s 21st Century building plan, the new, LEED Gold Certified, 103,350-SF, $38M facility was constructed on the same site as the existing school, resulting in challenging phased construction.  Building spaces include academics, community learning spaces for neighborhood outreach, and a courtyard for secure outdoor learning. JPA collaborated with a peer MBE consultant to design the school’s MEP/FP systems.  Air-cooled variable refrigerant systems and dedicated outdoor air systems with energy recovery provides space conditioning and ventilation for the classrooms, administration and community center spaces. Condensing boilers and a high-efficiency air-cooled chiller with variable speed water distribution pumps serve air-handling units for the gymnasium, dining, media center, and music rooms. Return and exhaust air devices are mounted low within each occupied space to promote good room thermal comfort. A building energy management system is provided to monitor and control the mechanical system operations. The replacement school was designed utilizing BIM software, with the construction manager using the model as the baseline for building construction.
